Scientists predict how man will evolve in future

Print
If humans are still evolving, how will our specie look like in a millennium should we survive whatever environmental and social surprises are in store for us? Will we become larger or smaller, smarter or dumber? How will the emergence of new diseases and the rise in global temperature shape us? Will a new human species arise one day?

Paleontologists, biologists and evolution scientists who have studied the changes in humans since pre-historic times are unanimous that human body will undergo several changes in the near future. A team of futurologists consisting of biologists, anthropologists and paleontologists have designed a blueprint of a future human based on the likelihood of future environmental and social changes our world will undergo in the next few hundred years.

future-man"The male of the future will be medium-height, elephant-headed - a masterful man, with a trunk, big head, small eyes, small mouth, two large ears, two extra limbs and a large belly. Physically, by the next millennium, humans will be trans-humans, part biological evolution, part-godlike, but full of artificial engineering and cross-biological transplantation" said Dr. John Irving, leader of the team, an anthropologist at Cambridge University.

According to Dr Stephen Howard, an anthropologist at Yale University, the seeds of man's future evolution lie in the present. Mentally, we are currently experiencing the greatest spike in knowledge ever. “There are almost three billion google searches a month and they are growing – that’s a lot of information coming into our heads. Half of what students learn in their first year becomes outdated by the third years. In order to process, memorize and recollect such large chunks of information, we will need larger brains. Our future man is likely to have a very big head."

"In order to process vast amounts of information we will need more concentration skills. Our large eyes tend to distract us from tasks at hand. The pressure to memorize extraordinary quantities of incoming data would force future humans to develop smaller eyes which will reduce their sensory input and help them concentrate better. The man of the next millennium is also likely to have a small mouth since easy access to billions of terra-bytes of information through microchips installed inside the brain would make excessive talking redundant."

According to Dr Howard, although we will talk less, we will have big ears to ensure that there is no loss of information in transit. "Our inability to overcome racial, national, cultural and many other barriers stems from our lack of ability to listen properly to viewpoints of others. Compared to our big mouths, we have very small ears which makes it difficult and extremely boring for us to listen to other people talking. After hundreds of years of wars, tensions between races and communities and violent uprisings, humans will feel the need to overcome communication blocks due to mismatch between the sizes of our ears and mouths. Evolution will correct this dichotomy and eventually bless us with larger ears giving us the ability to listen more efficiently in the future."

The most remarkable prediction of the team is that we will grow elephant-like trunks by the end of this millennium. "Present day humans sorely lack a multi-tasking organ capable of varied tasks that they encounter in their daily lives. As life becomes more complex, the need for such an organ would force us to develop elephant-like trunks. Our larger brains would require more oxygen intake making our small noses obsolete. A trunk, apart from breathing in more air would also be useful as an extra limb, since all our four other limbs will be fully occupied most of the time"

Yes, in future, we may have four limbs!! Our future society would be highly complex requiring us to do many tasks simultaneously. Even today our two arms are a big hindrance in our ability to multi-task. With just two limbs at our disposal, typing on our keypads, sending text messages, answering phone calls, eating junk food, warding off mosquitoes or flies and covering our mouths while coughing or sneezing simultaneously becomes a difficult juggling act. In future, our bodies will respond to new challenges of the times by growing at least two extra limbs, says Dr. Robert Chang, an eminent biologist at Rockefeller Institute of Genetic Research, New York.

According to Dr. Chang, future humans will also have large bellies in order to aid easy digestion of junk-food. The future man would give up resisting unhealthy, junk food since excessive exposure to artificial additives present in junk food would forever change his taste buds making it impossible for him to survive on natural foods alone. A large stomach would become necessary to peacefully digest both healthy and junk food.

The team of researchers credited Prof. Ganeshan Muthuswami of Princeton University for providing the initial inspiration for this line of research. "A chance encounter with Professor Ganeshan at a seminar resulted in me asking him the meaning of his name. The professor explained to me that his name was derived from Hindu elephant god, Ganesha." said Dr. John Irving.

He also said that Lord Ganesha could have been a time-traveler from the future into our past. "When I googled Ganesha, I was amazed by the plethora of Ganesha art on the Internet. Lord Ganesha seems to be the one of the most popular gods in the world after Jesus. The abundance of artistic interpretations of his form suggest that millions of people are fascinated by his highly-evolved body. Perhaps he was a traveler from our future to the past who visited earth to show off his remarkably evolved body and influence us in evolving quickly!"
